Time to dig in: Metrolinx announces naming contest for TBMs

TORONTO — What will inspire you?

Metrolinx has announced a naming contest for the Ontario Line’s tunnel boring machines (TBMs).

The new TBMs will dig the southern tunnels for the subway, which will see 15 new stations at completion.

Community members can submit potential names for the TBMs through an that will remain open until Monday, June 23. 

Participants are encouraged to draw inspiration from local landmarks, history, cultural figures or unique features about the communities these TBMs will travel through. Since the TBMs will be working in a pair, themed and twin-related names are welcome, states the organization.

A shortlist of names will be posted for online voting once the submission period closes. Winners of the naming contest will be credited and can have a photo-op with the mammoth machines at the tunnel launch shaft.

The machines will dig a roughly six-kilometre pair of tunnels underground starting just east of Exhibition Station to just west of the Don River.
