Ontario Line update: Queen Station breaks ground, first TBMs on track from Germany

Ontario Line update: Queen Station breaks ground, first TBMs on track from Germany
ONTARIO GOVERNMENT — Ontario Line’s Queen Station, located on the northeast corner of Queen and Yonge, will make use of the existing TTC station entrance building at 2 Queen St. E. The station recently broke ground.

TORONTO — Some major moves are being made on the Ontario Line, with the provincial government announcing crews have started excavation work on the line’s Queen Station.

More than 100,000 cubic metres of dirt and rock will be excavated, states a release, and the new Ontario Line platform at Queen Station will be built 40 metres below street level, directly beneath the existing TTC Queen Station.

It will be the busiest stop on the Ontario Line, serving over 15,000 riders during peak hours.

News of the groundbreaking comes after two other recent updates on the line’s progress. On May 26, a post on X states two of the Ontario Line’s first tunnel boring machines are ready to set sail from Germany to Toronto. These machines are set to dig the twin tunnels that will stretch from Exhibition to the Don Yard, just east of the Don River, carving through rock and soil as deep as 40 metres below ground, explains Metrolinx.

In addition to the TBM making its way to the city, on May 22 it was reported under Front Street East crews are installing horizontal beams to form a strong arch that will support the roof of the future Ontario Line station in Corktown before cavern mining begins.

Once complete, the 15.6-kilometre Ontario Line will have 15 stations, running from Exhibition Place through the downtown core and connecting to the Line 5 Eglinton at Don Mills Road. The line will have more than 40 connections to other subway, bus, streetcar and regional train services.
