TORONTO — Throughout Monday (June 2) emergency responders were called to three separate incidents in Toronto and Mississauga as several workers were injured and one was killed.
Toronto police reported two workers were trapped after a trench collapsed just after 11:30 a.m. in the Edmund Avenue and Weston Road area of the city.
The workers were stuck waist deep in dirt over six feet down at the site, police stated.
Toronto Fire attended the scene and after a couple of hours they were able to free the men. Both workers were taken to hospital just after 1:30 p.m. with life-threatening injuries.
There were several road closures as a result of the collapse.
Ministry of Labour (MOL) inspectors and an engineer attended the project site. Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, two requirements were issued to the constructor, Chamberlain ion Services Limited, and one requirement was issued to the employer, Delta Group, the MOL reports. The investigation continues.
An incident also occurred at a Metrolinx rail maintenance yard in Mississauga and has been reported as a worker fatality. Media reports state the worker became trapped in a machine.
No further details have been released at this time, but Metrolinx did confirm to the Daily Commercial News that there were reports of a fatality at the 6211 Goreway Dr. yard.
“Our thoughts are with the individual and their loved ones during this difficult time,” the agency said. “As this matter is currently under investigation by police and the Ministry of Labour, we are not able to comment further.”
The MOL also expressed its condolences and stated two ministry inspectors attended the scene. One requirement was issued to the employer, Siemens Mobility Limited.
The third incident took place just after 1:30 p.m. and involved an apparent scaffolding and ladder collapse at what appears to be residential jobsite near Queen Street and Victoria park. Three workers sustained minor injuries.
An MOL inspector was assigned to investigate and issued one requirement under the Occupational Health and Safety Act to GT Shand Contracting.
